Read my blog on tans here Haven't had a spray tan before? Here's a few tips on how to get prepared so you get the most out of your tan:
If you are having a tan done for your wedding or a special event, it pays to have a trial run at lease 4 weeks beforehand to ensure you are happy with the colour.
The best time to get your tan is 2 days before your special event (i.e Saturday event, get tanned on Thursday)
Before Your Tan:
Exfoliate on the days leading up to your tan (do not exfoliate the day of your tan) make sure to pay attention to the elbows, knees and feet. Try not to over-exfoliate either as the solution won't stick.
If you need to wax or shave, make sure this is done at least the day before (not the day of). Soap residue left on the skin can affect your tan, causing it to go patchy or not adhere to your skin. It's best to shower the day of your tan without using any soaps or lotions and do not use shampoo or conditioner the day of your tan, residue may get left on your back and shoulders causing the tan to come out patchy.
If you are having a manicure or pedicure, have this done before your tan otherwise the tan will get soaked off during the process.
If you have deodorant on at your tan, your underarms will turn green.
At Your Tan:
When you arrive you'll need to fill out a client care card and we'll talk about what kind of tan you want.
You can wear a dark bikini for your tan or your underwear if you prefer. I have disposable g strings available if you prefer to wear those, or you can go fully naked – it’s up to you. The bronzer will wash out of most clothing (although not recommended to wear lighter colours or silk, cotton is best).
Wear loose dark clothing and jandles if possible. Your tan will rub so you don't want anything rubbing against your tan while it's developing (try to go bra-less if you can).
I will guide you on how to stand while I'm doing your tan.
You will be quite brown directly after your tan - don't panic you won't turn out that way, that's just the bronzer which you will wash off in the shower.
After Your Tan: You will be quite brown directly after your tan - don't panic you won't turn out that way, that's just the bronzer which you will wash off in the shower.
Your tan will initially appear dark on your skin; this is just the bronzer (kind of like a colour guide of where to spray for the tanner). The tan will develop over the course of time. If you want a light tan, wash off after 2 hours, medium tan wash off 3 - 4 hours or a dark tan leave on for 6 hours. It’s not recommended to leave the tan on longer than 6 hours as the bronzer may start affecting the tan by making it patchy. DO NOT SLEEP IN YOUR TAN.
After your tan, try not to wash your hands or get wet for at least an hour (the earlier you shower, the less tanned you will be). When you do shower, the water will run brown, don't panic though, that is just the bronzer washing off. Don't use soap, just rinse with luke warm water until the water runs clear.
Until your tan has developed, try to refrain from doing any physical activities that might make you sweat, do not go swimming either. Try not to bump into anything or get wet (this will result in the bronzer washing/rubbing off and the tan won’t develop there).
After showering, you may only be slightly brown or your normal shade of pale, but don't worry the tan is still working and will develop over the next 12 hours. So if you’re not as tanned as you were hoping, have patience. Pat yourself dry, instead of rubbing.
Moisturizing will extend the life of your tan, however do not moisturize until your tan has fully developed (12 hours after tanning).
Moisturizing too early may cause the tan to not develop properly.
Moisturizing will extend the life of your tan, but be sure to use and oil-free moisturizer and don't use body oil (oil will cause the tan to come off). I recommend at least 2 times a day.
Your tan can last anywhere between 3 - 10 days. Different people have different results; some medications can cause patchiness of the tan as well as hormones and for some people even some types of food.
Your face and hands will be the first to fade due to washing. Either invest in a facial tanner or be sure to match your foundation to your body.
Exercise, sweating, sunscreen and swimming will cause your tan to fade faster.
Do not shave or exfoliate after your tan as this will cause the tan to lighten and become patchy.
