This is one question that always gets to me, and not in a good way.
We don’t do it for love, well in a way we do as I love my job, I love doing makeup but not so much that I’ll do it for free, after all I’ve got a family to help support and a mortgage to pay.
If you do your research, you’ll find a broad range of pricing from one makeup artist to another. There are a few reasons for this – education being one. At this time, you don’t actually need to be qualified in NZ to be a makeup artist (which seriously needs to change) so these artists might charge lower.
Location is also a factor – small towns may be lower or higher, less artists in the area they can charge what they like as they will get work no matter what. Or if there are quite a few artists you’ll get the ones who like to undercut other artists so will price themselves lower in order to get more work (which really isn’t fair but hey – that’s a whole other blog lol).
People usually ask why wedding makeup is more expensive than general makeup, so I’ve listed below why I charge more for bridal makeup:
I hope the explanations above give you a little insight as to why bridal makeup is charged as it is. I’ve mentioned this in another of my blogs but it always continues to amaze me that brides will spend thousands on a wedding photographer to capture the day in time, yet they want to scrimp on their makeup artist! What’s up with that?
