There’s no doubt about it, every makeup artist has their own style of makeup they are good at or like to do, some even call it their signature style. Heck mine is “natural whilst looking good in person and on camera” but the questions is – can we do more than one “style”?
Yes, is what the answer should be. Every makeup artist should be versatile and be able to do a range of looks/styles. Whilst most will have their strengths and weaknesses, as long as you are open and honest about it then that’s all good. My weaknesses would have to be winged liner and brows, but I’m working on it.
Does the makeup artist you are looking into have a variety of images of their work, or are there many photos all with exactly the same look (and I mean EXACTLY the same look/colours)? Are there photos of young, old, different skin colours and tones etc.?
I try to post a variety of photos on my website, but I also try to keep my website photos crisp and clean, so the rest of my photos will either be on my Instagram or facebook page, after all photo’s is what gets us work, as well as recommendations from past clients.
I’m not a fan of selfies, never have been and never will. Yes, I will post a selfie every now and then as I feel it’s important to engage with my clientele on a more personal level sometimes, but you’re not going to see me posting my face every week. I mean, come on, obviously you can put makeup on your own face, I’d be worried if you couldn’t and I follow your page to see your makeup skills and not your face all over my newsfeed ha ha.
Whilst my style is natural, I will tailor the colours I use to your eye colour and the way I place the shadows to your own eye shape – makeup isn’t one size fits all which some artists seem to think.
I love doing bridal work whereas more often than not, the brief is natural, while making my eyes pop. I love doing this sort of work as the bride still looks like herself, isn’t going to freak her fiancé and family out when she walks down the aisle and will have banging photos for ever and ever.
Anyway that’s my words of wisdom for the night – as always blunt and to the point xx
