I’m Leanne, 39 years old (at the time of writing this blog), wife to a wonderful and supportive husband, mother to 3-year-old Haley and two fur babies (cats – Daisy and Havoc).
I’ve always loved makeup, during high school I used makeup to boost my confidence and feel better about myself. Putting makeup on just made me feel happy. I’ve suffered from mild depression a lot of my life as well as anxiety and panic attacks and makeup was my haven.
At 17 I decided to enrol to be a hairdresser at Winters School of hairdressing (no longer around, shows how old I am lol) but then I got offered a paying job as a teacher’s aide at a local pre-school. So, there I was left weighing up the options – paying job or student loan and no money. Suffice to say, the paying job won as I was at that stage of my life where I was into partying every weekend and needed to fund my lifestyle. Six months later I moved into the office admin world, then accounts and office management. I worked with some awesome people, but the work just didn’t make me happy doing the same thing day in day out.
Fast forward to when I was 33 – makeup had always been at the back of my mind so I looked into what courses were available. We couldn’t afford for me to be off work and study full time so I found a small part time course at The Makeup School on weeknights. I loved the course and learnt heaps, but has it was only a short course I felt like I needed more so I enrolled in the Phoenix Cosmetics Beauty School and did a further two courses. I started freelancing while I was still studying in 2012 (first course in 2011).
So there I was working 5 days a week in my admin job and working weekends with makeup – needless to say I was exhausted, but I just couldn’t get enough of it. I absolutely loved it. One day the dream was to do just makeup and that dream came true after the birth of my daughter. I decided I wasn’t returning to work and would just focus on my makeup. I then decided to add hair on to my services so had hair styling lessons with 3 talented hair & makeup artists (note I am a hair stylist – not a hair dresser).
Bridal makeup is my passion and specialty – it’s such an honour to be a part of such an amazing day. I would love to do editorial type makeup, but there’s not really much call for that where we live.
In 2015 my family relocated from Helensville, Auckland down to Tauranga in NZ’s sunny Bay of Plenty. My husband grew up in Tauranga and we were ready for a lifestyle change, the hustle and bustle of Auckland was just getting too much.
I was a bit worried that I wouldn’t find work down here but I was super busy with wedding season when we moved and am already booked out for next season which is awesome!
Makeup may be my job and my income, but it doesn’t feel like work. I just love it and get such an adrenalin rush from doing it, especially when I get great feedback and see the makeup in photos.
So my advice to you is, if you have a dream – don’t let go, it may take time to get there, but you’ll get there just as I have xxx
